A single serving of creamy mac and cheese made in a mug in just five minutes. Perfect for late-night cravings, dorm rooms, or when you need comfort food fast.

Ingredients

Scale
  • ½ cup elbow macaroni
  • ½ cup water
  • ¼ cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 2 tablespoons whole milk
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ⅛ teaspoon black pepper
  • Pinch of garlic powder (optional)
  • Pinch of paprika (optional)

Instructions

  1. Add the pasta and water to your mug. Pour in ½ cup of elbow macaroni and ½ cup of water. Make sure the water covers the pasta completely. Give it a quick stir so the noodles aren’t stuck together.
  2. Microwave on high for 2 minutes. Set your microwave to full power and cook for 2 minutes. The water will bubble up, so keep an eye on it. If it looks like it’s about to overflow, pause the microwave, let it settle, then continue.
  3. Stir, then microwave for another 1 minute 30 seconds. Take the mug out (careful, it’s hot!), stir the pasta, and check the water level. Most of the water should be absorbed. If it looks dry, add a tablespoon more water. Return to the microwave and cook for another 1 minute 30 seconds. The pasta should be tender but still have a tiny bite—al dente.
  4. Add the butter, milk, and seasonings. Remove the mug from the microwave. Immediately add 1 tablespoon of butter, 2 tablespoons of milk, ¼ teaspoon salt, ⅛ teaspoon pepper, and the garlic powder and paprika if using. Stir until the butter is completely melted and everything is combined.
  5. Add the cheese and stir vigorously. Sprinkle in the ¼ cup of shredded cheddar cheese. Stir quickly and continuously for about 30 seconds. The cheese should melt into the hot pasta and create a smooth, creamy sauce. If it looks too thick, add another splash of milk. If it looks too thin, let it sit for 30 seconds—the pasta will absorb some of the liquid.
  6. Let it rest for 1 minute. This is the hardest step. Let the mug sit for a full minute before eating. The sauce thickens as it cools slightly, and the flavors meld together.
  7. Enjoy directly from the mug. Grab a spoon or fork and dig in. No bowl needed. No extra dishes.

Notes

Use a 12-ounce mug to prevent overflow. Grate your own cheese for the smoothest sauce. Add cheese off the heat to avoid graininess. Let the mac rest for 1 minute before eating to allow the sauce to thicken.
