Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 box of vanilla or sponge cake mix (plus ingredients listed on the box)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 cups heavy whipping cream, chilled
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (or almond extract for a twist)
  • 1 box (3.4 oz) instant vanilla pudding mix
  • 2 cups cold milk (whole milk works best for richness)
  • 2 cups fresh strawberries, hulled and sliced
  • 1 cup fresh blueberries
  • 1 cup fresh raspberries
  • Optional: 1/4 cup granulated sugar for macerating berries

Instructions

  1. Prepare the cake mix according to package instructions, adding the vanilla extract for extra flavor. Bake in a 9×13-inch pan, then let it cool completely. Cut into cubes or slices.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the pudding mix and cold milk until smooth. Let it set for 5 minutes.
  3. In a large bowl, combine the chilled heavy cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract. Whip until soft peaks form. Gently fold in the prepared pudding until smooth.
  4. If desired, toss the sliced strawberries with granulated sugar and let them sit for 10 minutes to macerate.
  5. In your trifle dish, start with a layer of cake pieces, followed by a layer of cream filling, and then a layer of berries. Repeat the layers until the dish is full, finishing with berries on top.
  6. Cover the trifle with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 2 hours to let the flavors meld together.

Notes

For extra texture, add crushed cookies or toasted nuts between the cream and berry layers. Chill the trifle for at least 2 hours for best flavor.
