These homemade beef burgers with melty cheddar cheese are juicy, flavorful, and perfect for any occasion, from backyard cookouts to weeknight dinners.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound (450g) ground beef (80/20)
  • 1/4 cup (30g) breadcrumbs
  • 1 beaten egg
  • 1 tablespoon (15ml) Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 4 slices sharp cheddar cheese
  • 4 burger buns (toasted)
  • Optional toppings: lettuce, tomato, pickles, ketchup, mustard

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, beaten egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper. Mix gently using your hands, avoiding overmixing.
  2. Divide the mixture into four equal portions and shape each into a patty about 3/4 inch (2cm) thick. Create a slight indentation in the center of each patty with your thumb.
  3. Preheat a skillet or grill over medium-high heat. Add a drizzle of oil if using a skillet, or lightly grease the grill grates.
  4. Cook the patties for about 3-4 minutes on one side. Flip and cook for another 3 minutes, then add a slice of cheddar cheese to each patty during the final minute of cooking to allow it to melt.
  5. Toast the burger buns lightly while the cheese melts on the patties. Brush melted butter on the buns before toasting for added flavor.
  6. Assemble the burgers by placing the patty on the bun and adding your favorite toppings. Serve immediately.

Notes

For extra flavor, brush the patties with a mixture of melted butter and Worcestershire sauce while cooking. Avoid pressing the patties to retain their juiciness.
