Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 pound ground beef (or ground turkey)
  • 1 cup tomato sauce
  • 1 can (14 ounces) diced tomatoes
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1/2 teaspoon sugar
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1 cup ricotta cheese
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • Salt, to taste
  • 12 lasagna noodles, cooked according to package instructions
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • Fresh parsley or basil for garnish (optional)
  • Red pepper flakes for a touch of heat (optional)

Instructions

  1. Cook the lasagna noodles: Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the lasagna noodles and cook until al dente, according to package instructions. Drain and rinse under cold water to prevent sticking. Set aside.
  2. Make the meat sauce: Heat olive oil in a large skillet or saucepan over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and cook until softened, about 3-4 minutes. Add the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute until fragrant.
  3. Brown the meat: Add the ground beef (or turkey) to the skillet and cook until browned, breaking it up with a wooden spoon. Drain any excess fat if needed.
  4. Add the tomato base: Stir in the tomato sauce, diced tomatoes, tomato paste, oregano, basil, sugar, salt, and pepper. Let the sauce simmer for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally. Taste and adjust seasoning as needed.
  5. Prepare the ricotta mixture: In a mixing bowl, combine ricotta cheese, Parmesan cheese, egg, Italian seasoning, and a pinch of salt. Stir until well blended.
  6. Assemble the lasagna: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Spread a thin layer of meat sauce on the bottom of a 9×13 baking dish. Place a layer of lasagna noodles on top, followed by a layer of ricotta mixture, a sprinkle of mozzarella cheese, and more meat sauce. Repeat the layers until you’ve used all the ingredients, ending with a layer of sauce and mozzarella cheese on top.
  7. Bake: Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake for 25 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for another 15-20 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown.
  8. Rest and serve: Let the lasagna cool for 10-15 minutes before slicing. Garnish with fresh parsley or basil, if desired, and serve warm.

Notes

[‘Rinse cooked noodles under cold water and lay them flat on a parchment-lined tray to prevent sticking.’, ‘Be generous with each layer to ensure every bite is packed with flavor.’, ‘Allow the meat sauce to simmer for at least 15 minutes for the flavors to meld beautifully.’, ‘Grate your own mozzarella for better melting and flavor.’, ‘Let the lasagna sit for 10-15 minutes after baking before slicing to prevent it from falling apart.’]
