This recipe offers smoky, juicy grilled hot dogs paired with a customizable toppings bar, perfect for backyard barbecues, quick dinners, and gatherings. Ready in under 20 minutes, it combines simple ingredients with a fun, creative serving style.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 12 high-quality beef or pork hot dogs (Oscar Mayer Natural recommended)
  • 12 hot dog buns (classic white or whole wheat)
  • Olive oil or melted butter (for toasting buns)
  • Diced onions (raw or caramelized)
  • Shredded cheddar cheese or dairy-free cheese
  • Relish (sweet or dill)
  • Mustard varieties (yellow, Dijon, spicy brown)
  • Ketchup (classic or no-sugar-added)
  • Chopped tomatoes
  • Pickle slices or spears
  • Jalapeño slices
  • Coleslaw
  • Bacon bits (optional)
  • Fresh herbs like chopped chives or parsley
  • Optional extras: avocado slices, hot sauce or sriracha, pickled red onions

Instructions

  1. Preheat the grill to medium-high heat, about 375–400°F (190–204°C), and let it warm up for 10 minutes.
  2. Prepare the toppings bar by dicing onions, chopping tomatoes, shredding cheese, and arranging all toppings in small bowls for easy access (about 15 minutes).
  3. Lightly brush the inside of each bun with olive oil or melted butter. Place buns cut-side down on the grill for 1–2 minutes until golden brown and slightly crisp. Remove and set aside.
  4. Place hot dogs on the grill perpendicular to the grates to get grill marks. Cook for 5–7 minutes, turning every couple of minutes to ensure even cooking and a crisp exterior. Watch closely to avoid flare-ups.
  5. Check for doneness: hot dogs should be hot throughout with a slight char but not split open. If splitting occurs, lower heat and continue cooking.
  6. Place each hot dog in a toasted bun and let everyone add their favorite toppings from the bar.
  7. Serve immediately with classic sides like potato salad or chips.

Notes

Poke a few tiny holes in hot dogs before grilling to release steam and prevent bursting. Use tongs to turn hot dogs gently without piercing. Toast buns just before serving to keep them warm and crisp. Keep a spray bottle of water nearby to control flare-ups. For no grill, pan-fry or oven roast hot dogs as alternatives.
