A tangy, sweet mustard-based BBQ sauce with a subtle smoky flavor, perfect for grilled chicken, pork ribs, and more. This easy recipe balances sharp mustard notes with mellow sweetness and a hint of spice.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup yellow mustard
  • 1/3 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 1/4 cup dark brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/4 cup water

Instructions

  1. In a saucepan, combine yellow mustard, apple cider vinegar, honey, and dark brown sugar. Whisk over medium-low heat for 3-4 minutes until sugar dissolves and mixture starts to steam.
  2. Stir in smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, and kosher salt. Whisk until fully incorporated.
  3. Gradually add water while whisking to thin the sauce to desired consistency. If too thin, simmer 1-2 minutes longer to thicken. Total simmer time about 8-10 minutes, stirring often.
  4. Keep heat low to maintain a gentle simmer, allowing flavors to meld without burning. Taste and adjust sweetness or tang by adding more honey or vinegar as needed.
  5. Remove from heat and let cool to room temperature. Transfer to a clean jar. Sauce thickens and flavors develop overnight.

Notes

Simmer the sauce low and slow to avoid burning sugars. Taste frequently and adjust honey or vinegar in small increments for balance. Sauce thickens as it cools and tastes better after resting overnight. Store refrigerated up to two weeks. For vegan version, substitute honey with maple syrup or agave nectar. Optional add-ins include cayenne pepper for heat or liquid smoke for smokier flavor.
