butter board recipe - featured image

A simple yet delicious butter board featuring softened unsalted butter mixed with fresh herbs and drizzled with honey, served with crusty bread dippers. Perfect for quick snacks or gatherings.

Ingredients

  • Unsalted butter, softened (about 1/2 cup or 1 stick)
  • Fresh herbs (thyme, rosemary, chives), finely chopped (about 2 tablespoons total)
  • Honey, preferably raw or wildflower (about 2 tablespoons)
  • Flaky sea salt (like Maldon), to taste
  • Freshly cracked black pepper, to taste
  • Garlic, finely minced (1 small clove, optional)
  • Crusty bread (rustic baguette or sourdough), sliced into dippers (about 1/2 inch thick slices)

Instructions

  1. Soften the unsalted butter by leaving it at room temperature for about 30 minutes until soft but not melted.
  2. Finely chop about 2 tablespoons total of fresh thyme, rosemary, and chives.
  3. In a medium mixing bowl, combine the softened butter with the chopped herbs, minced garlic (if using), and freshly cracked black pepper. Stir gently until evenly distributed. Optionally, whip with a hand mixer for 1-2 minutes for a lighter texture.
  4. Transfer the herbed butter to a serving board or platter and spread in a rustic, uneven layer about 1/4 inch thick.
  5. Generously drizzle honey over the surface of the butter, allowing it to pool in crevices.
  6. Sprinkle flaky sea salt over the top for bursts of crunch and flavor contrast.
  7. Slice crusty bread into medium-thick pieces (about 1/2 inch). Toast lightly if desired.
  8. Arrange the bread dippers around the butter board and serve immediately at room temperature.

Notes

Use unsalted butter for better control of saltiness. Fresh herbs provide the best flavor and texture; if using dried herbs, reduce quantity and add lemon zest. Room temperature butter is key for easy mixing and spreading. Toast bread lightly for added texture but avoid over-toasting. For dairy-free, use plant-based butter and maple syrup instead of honey. Store leftovers covered in the fridge up to 3 days and bring to room temperature before serving.
