A playful and tasty holiday appetizer shaped like a turkey, combining creamy cheese with crunchy pretzel feathers. Perfect for Thanksgiving or fall gatherings, this cheese ball is quick to make and a crowd-pleaser.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 1 ½ cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese (about 150 g)
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • ½ tsp smoked paprika
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tbsp fresh chives, finely chopped
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 2025 crunchy pretzel sticks
  • Black olives, sliced (optional, for eyes)
  • Small pieces of red bell pepper (optional, for wattle)

Instructions

  1. Soften the cream cheese by leaving it at room temperature for at least 30 minutes or microwave in 10-second bursts until just softened.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine the softened cream cheese with shredded cheddar. Mix with a hand mixer on medium speed or a sturdy spoon until smooth and creamy, about 2-3 minutes.
  3. Stir in garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, Worcestershire sauce, chopped chives, salt, and pepper. Mix until evenly distributed and taste to adjust seasoning if needed.
  4. Lay out a large piece of plastic wrap. Spoon the cheese mixture onto the center and gather the edges to form a rounded mound resembling a turkey’s body. Twist the plastic wrap tightly to compact and smooth the shape. Chill in the refrigerator for 1 hour.
  5. While chilling, prepare the pretzel sticks by trimming any that are too long to fit neatly around the cheese ball.
  6. Remove the cheese ball from the fridge and unwrap it onto a serving plate. Starting at the back, press pretzel sticks into the rear edge, fanning them out to mimic turkey feathers. Add layers for a full tail effect.
  7. Use sliced black olives for eyes and small pieces of red bell pepper for the wattle and beak. Gently press them onto the front of the cheese ball. Optionally, use a small piece of carrot for the beak.
  8. Chill the assembled turkey cheese ball in the refrigerator for 30 minutes before serving.

Notes

Use a cream cheese brand like Philadelphia for smooth texture and a sharp cheddar like Cabot for good flavor. You can substitute pepper jack cheese for heat or dairy-free cream cheese for a vegan option. Chill the cheese ball well before shaping and assembling to help it hold its shape. Add pretzel feathers just before serving to keep them crunchy. For a different crunch, use thin breadsticks instead of pretzels. The cheese ball can be made up to two days ahead and stored tightly wrapped in the refrigerator without pretzels.
