These crispy pencil pretzel rods feature a sunny yellow candy coating that is sweet, salty, and perfectly crunchy. A fun and colorful snack perfect for parties, kids, and casual get-togethers.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1215 regular-sized pretzel rods
  • 12 ounces (340 grams) yellow candy melts
  • 2 tablespoons white chocolate chips (optional)
  • Black food coloring gel (small amount)
  • Light brown food coloring gel (optional)
  • Edible marker or black icing (optional)
  • Wax paper or silicone mat for drying

Instructions

  1. Melt the candy coating: Place 12 ounces of yellow candy melts and 2 tablespoons of white chocolate chips in a microwave-safe bowl. Heat in 30-second intervals, stirring well after each until smooth and silky, about 2-3 minutes total. Avoid overheating.
  2. Prepare your workspace by laying wax paper or a silicone mat on a flat surface.
  3. Dip the pretzel rods: Holding a pretzel rod by one end, dip it into the melted yellow candy, covering about 3/4 of its length. Gently tap the rod against the bowl edge to remove excess coating. Work quickly before the candy thickens.
  4. Dry the coated pretzels by placing them on wax paper or a cooling rack. Let set for 10-15 minutes at room temperature or refrigerate for 5 minutes if warm.
  5. Create the pencil tip by applying a small amount of black food coloring gel with a fine food-safe brush to form the tip. Add a light brown band above the tip to mimic wood.
  6. Draw pencil details using a thin brush or edible marker to add lines or wood grain effect on the brown band.
  7. Let the decorated pretzels dry undisturbed for another 20 minutes to fully harden. Store at room temperature once dry.

Notes

Do not overheat candy melts to avoid graininess. Work quickly as candy thickens fast. Use room temperature pretzels for even coating. Let each layer dry fully before adding details to prevent smudging. Store in airtight container at room temperature away from heat and humidity. For gluten-free, use gluten-free pretzel rods. Optional edible glaze spray can add a glossy finish.
