Crispy Mozzarella-Stuffed Onion Rings

Indulgent and satisfying onion rings stuffed with gooey mozzarella, perfect for parties or snack cravings.

  • Large yellow onions, peeled and cut into ½-inch slices
  • Mozzarella cheese (sticks or block sliced into thin pieces)
  • 1 cup (120g) all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs, lightly beaten
  • ½ cup (120ml) milk (whole milk or dairy-free alternative)
  • 1½ cups (90g) panko breadcrumbs
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ¼ tsp pepper
  • ½ tsp garlic powder (optional)
  • ½ tsp paprika (optional)
  • Vegetable or canola oil for frying

Instructions

  1. Peel the onions and slice them into ½-inch rounds. Separate the rings carefully, aiming for pairs of similar-sized rings for stuffing.
  2. Cut mozzarella sticks or slices into pieces that fit snugly between two onion rings. Place mozzarella between each onion ring pair, ensuring the cheese is fully enclosed.
  3. Set up your breading station: In one shallow bowl, add flour. In another bowl, whisk together eggs and milk. In the third bowl, mix panko breadcrumbs with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and paprika.
  4. Dip each mozzarella-stuffed onion ring into the flour, making sure it’s evenly coated. Next, dip it into the egg mixture, then into the breadcrumbs. Press the breadcrumbs firmly onto the rings to ensure they stick. Repeat for all rings.
  5. Heat 2-3 inches of vegetable oil in a deep frying pan or pot to 350°F (175°C). Test the oil temperature with a small piece of bread—it should sizzle immediately.
  6. Carefully place 3-4 rings into the oil at a time, making sure not to overcrowd the pan. Fry for 2-3 minutes on each side or until golden brown.
  7. Remove the onion rings with a slotted spoon and place them on paper towels to drain excess oil. Let cool slightly before serving.

Notes

For extra flavor, add Parmesan cheese to the breadcrumb mixture or cayenne pepper for heat. Use cold mozzarella to prevent leaks during frying.
