Rich, cheesy, and comforting, these creamy au gratin potatoes are perfect for family dinners, holidays, or a simple weeknight indulgence.

Ingredients

  • Russet Potatoes (peeled and thinly sliced, about 1/8-inch thick)
  • Unsalted Butter
  • All-Purpose Flour
  • Whole Milk (room temperature)
  • Heavy Cream (or substitute half-and-half)
  • Shredded Cheddar Cheese (sharp cheddar preferred)
  • Fresh Garlic (minced)
  • Nutmeg (optional)
  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • Parmesan Cheese (grated)

Instructions

  1. Peel and slice the potatoes into thin rounds (about 1/8-inch thick). Set them aside.
  2. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish lightly with butter or cooking spray.
  3. In a large saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and cook for 1 minute. Sprinkle in the flour and whisk continuously for 1-2 minutes until it forms a paste.
  4. Slowly pour in the milk and cream, whisking constantly to prevent lumps. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer and cook until thickened, about 5 minutes.
  5. Remove the saucepan from heat and stir in the shredded cheddar cheese, nutmeg, salt, and pepper until smooth.
  6. Arrange half of the potato slices in the prepared baking dish, slightly overlapping. Pour half of the cheese sauce over the potatoes and spread evenly. Repeat with the remaining potatoes and sauce.
  7. Sprinkle the grated Parmesan cheese evenly on top of the final layer.
  8. Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 45 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 20-25 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the potatoes are tender.
  9. Let the dish cool for 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

[‘Use room temperature milk and cream to avoid curdling.’, ‘Thin, uniform slices ensure even cooking.’, ‘Broil for the last 2 minutes for extra crispiness.’, ‘Let the dish rest for 10 minutes before serving for easier slicing.’]
