Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour (420 grams), sifted
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 2 ¼ teaspoons instant yeast (one packet)
  • 1 cup warm milk (240 ml), about 110°F (43°C)
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter (57 grams), melted and slightly cooled
  • 1 large egg, room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter (85 grams), softened for garlic butter
  • 3 cloves garlic, finely minced or pressed
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, finely chopped
  • 2 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese (optional)
  • Salt, a pinch, to taste
  • Black pepper, freshly ground, to taste

Instructions

  1. Activate the Yeast: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together warm milk (110°F/43°C), sugar, and yeast. Let sit for about 5 minutes until foamy.
  2. Mix the Dough: Add melted butter, egg, and salt to the yeast mixture. Stir gently to combine.
  3. Add the Flour: Gradually add sifted flour about 1 cup at a time, stirring. Knead dough for 8 to 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. First Rise: Shape dough into a ball, place in lightly oiled bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm spot for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  5. Prepare Garlic Butter: Mix softened butter, minced garlic, parsley, Parmesan, salt, and pepper until smooth. Set aside.
  6. Shape the Bread: Punch down dough, roll out into a 12×16 inch rectangle. Cut into 3×3 inch squares.
  7. Layer with Garlic Butter: Spread garlic butter over each square, then stack the squares.
  8. Form Tree Shape: Cut stacked dough into a triangle to mimic a Christmas tree. Place upright in greased loaf or cake pan.
  9. Second Rise: Cover loosely and let rise for 30 minutes until puffy.
  10. Bake: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake for 30 to 35 minutes until golden brown and hollow sounding when tapped.
  11. Cool and Serve: Cool in pan for 10 minutes, then pull apart and enjoy warm.

Notes

If the top browns too quickly, tent with foil halfway through baking. Use bread flour for chewier texture or dairy-free butter and plant milk for vegan version. Rotate pan halfway through baking for even crust. Let bread cool slightly before pulling apart for best texture.
