Ingredients

Scale
  • Fresh apples, peeled, cored, and sliced (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp recommended)
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • Pinch of nutmeg
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour (use gluten-free flour if needed)
  • 1/2 cup rolled oats
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened (swap with dairy-free butter if preferred)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • Optional: Chopped nuts like pecans or walnuts, raisins or dried cranberries

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter or cooking spray.
  2. Peel, core, and slice the apples into thin, even slices (about 1/4-inch thickness). Toss the apple slices with lemon juice, 1/4 cup granulated sugar, 1/4 cup brown sugar, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, and a pinch of nutmeg. Spread the mixture evenly in the prepared baking dish.
  3. In a mixing bowl, combine 1/2 cup all-purpose flour, 1/2 cup rolled oats, 1/2 cup brown sugar, and 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon. Add 1/2 cup softened butter and mix until crumbly using a fork or your fingers.
  4. Sprinkle the crumbly topping evenly over the apples, ensuring good coverage.
  5. Bake in the preheated oven for 35-40 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender.
  6. Allow the dessert to cool for about 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

For a crunchier topping, add chopped nuts like pecans or walnuts. If the topping browns too quickly, cover the dish loosely with aluminum foil for the last 10 minutes of baking.
